2019 Golf Nut of the Year
“Trust me, there is only one Charlie Madge.” – Founder, Golf Nuts
Here’s the body of evidence…
First, this…who knew!
There’s Charlie at the 2018 Masters green jacket ceremony in Butler Cabin. How the heck did he get in there, anyway? Oh, well, nice job, Charlie. You’re amazing!
Charlie loves to putt. Boy, howdy, does he love to putt! In 2018, a year in which he turned 91 years of age, he made 1,200 four-footers without a miss. He putted 100 in a row once a month throughout the year to achieve his 1,200 without a miss. His goal in 2019 is to make Way to go, Charlie!
A retired engineer, he also loves to design putters. The one above is a real beauty. Below are some of his other designs…
His favorite designs are side-saddle putters (left). The center photo shows some of the putter heads, and the four photos on the bottom are what we shall call some of his more “exotic” designs (Be sure to read the captions).
And, yes, Charlie also knows how to play the game!
He once even played Muirfield and the Old Course at St. Andrews without a tee time!
“Even though I had the pro at the prestigious Fiddlers Elbow write the Captain at Muirfield I could not get a starting time but I was determined to play it. I went there at 7 AM and explained my desires and gave him a letter of introduction, he politely said that they had a Club Tournament and had no space available but said to come back after noon and he would try to fit us in.
We went to Gullane, played the East Course, returned and were told to come back around 4:30 and he would try to put us with members. After playing the West Course at Gullane, we came back at 4:30 and played with a member, dapperly dressed with knickers, a vest, tie and a Scottish hat. We had a ball and and I shot a 79. We walked and carried our own bags for 54 holes that day at age 53. I was exhausted.”
As for playing St. Andrews without a tee time, that remains a state secret, or at least a secret between Charlie and me.
And this just in from Charlie’s Florida headquarters…
That’s right, our buddy, good ol’ Charlie Madge invented this technique looong before good ol’ Bernhard Langer did. In fact, good ol’ Bernie might just have stolen the idea from good ol’ Charlie.
Finally, we’ll close with this photo of Charlie allowing himself to be photographed with an adoring fan. No word on whether Charlie gave Arnold Palmer his autograph.
Charlie, you are a national treasure…AND Golf Nut of the Year!
